We know everything with your newborn is a new adventure. Even if you’re not caring for your first child, when it comes to urgent care every situation is different, and may bring up concerns you haven’t previously faced. Knowing when and where to seek pediatric urgent care in Cumming and Forsyth County before situations arise can help you remain calm and know what to expect, if and when the time comes.

Why Take Your Newborn to a Pediatric Urgent Care Clinic?

Newborns cannot tell us what hurts, where it hurts, how they feel, or when they began to experience discomfort. But as a parent you’ll know when your baby doesn’t feel well, and you want them to receive the best care possible.

When it’s a non-life-threatening medical situation, we suggest visiting a pediatric urgent care for your child versus a regular urgent care or the emergency room. Pediatricians and pediatric nurses (especially neonatal), are trained to work with children and families. They know what to look for in children, what questions to ask to lead to a diagnosis, and how to help parents understand what’s happening with a baby in an urgent situation.

When you visit your usual pediatrician for your newborn’s urgent care needs, you’re visiting a place that has your family’s information from birth to the present moment. This can make it easier to identify what is causing your newborn’s sickness or pain.

When Should You Seek Urgent Care for Your Newborn?

There are times when your baby may need same-day care that is not an immediate emergency, but is still pressing. So what are some of these situations? The first would be in case of a high fever. When a baby is under two months and has a fever, you may be able to feel how hot they are. If the fever doesn’t break and your newborn is fussy, that’s a good time to seek urgent care.

If the fever is co-occurring with cough or mucus and other cold or flu symptoms, it’s best to seek treatment to identify the cause. As a baby’s immune system begins to develop, it’s important to know specifically what your baby is dealing with. You’ll want to work with newborn care specialists to identify if your baby has any viruses like RSV or COVID-19 to get the proper treatment.

More reasons to visit the pediatric urgent care include the following situations.

  • If you notice your baby isn’t urinating as much or isn’t feeding, this could indicate dehydration or gastrointestinal distress.
  • If your baby is wheezing and still able to breathe, or if their throat seems a deeper shade of red.
  • When a rash develops.
  • If your baby has a non-life-threatening allergic reaction.
  • When you notice any external injuries.

We know these can be scary situations to consider, and our trained pediatricians and nurses will help your newborn get back to health as quickly as possible.
